VICTOR IN AIR COMBAT: 403038 FLIGHT LIEUTENANT (FLT LT) GILLIAN CAMPBELL OF POTTS POINT, NSW, PILOT OF NO. 457 (GREY NURSE SPITFIRE) SQUADRON RAAF, WHO SHARED WITH FLT LT SCRIMGEOUR OF ANNERLEY, QLD, THE FIRST JAPANESE AIRCRAFT SHOT DOWN IN AERIAL COMBAT OVER BORNEO, ON 1945-06-20. FLT LT CAMPBELL FLEW FIGHTERS FOR THREE YEARS IN BRITAIN, MIDDLE EAST, SICILY AND ITALY. HE SCORED ONE HEINKEL DESTROYED AND THREE STUKAS DAMAGED.
All of the squadron’s Spitfires were painted with a shark’s mouth, giving them the nickname of the ‘Grey Nurse Squadron’. The Squadron had some notable characters including Pete Brothers, Clive ‘Killer’ Caldwell and Bruce Watson.

About Colin Parker
London born in 1943, I spent most of my working life in the aviation industry. As Senior Illustrator at Rolls-Royce, UK, I was responsible for creating many of the air brush colour cutaways of the aero engines designed and built by the company. Apart from aviation I have always been a “car nut”, going to race meetings at Brands Hatch and Silverstone in the UK where I managed to pick up many commissions, not only cars, but landscapes too. I have been heavily influenced by the foremost aviation artist, the late Frank Wootton OBE, FAGAvA, and like him I try to represent aircraft in action with the perception of clouds and atmosphere as seen from the pilot’s point of view.
